Grievance Letter Review (UK)

What is this?

A grievance review usually looks at what the employee is complaining about, what evidence supports the complaint, how the employer's policy frames the process, and what outcome or remedy is being sought. The usefulness of the grievance often depends on whether the document is specific, evidenced, and aligned with the workplace process.

Relevant law often includes the ACAS Code where applicable, internal grievance procedures, employment-law context, and the evidential basis for the complaint raised.

Key legal requirements

• the grievance issues, dates, people involved, and outcome sought should be stated clearly
• the allegations should be matched to documents, messages, meeting notes, or other supporting evidence where possible
• the grievance route should fit the employer's policy and any linked disciplinary, whistleblowing, or discrimination context
• the employer's response, investigation, and appeal record should align with the issues actually raised

Why this matters

A grievance can become much less effective if it is emotionally understandable but documentarily vague or procedurally misdirected.
