A notice of coding (often called a PAYE coding notice) is issued by HM Revenue and Customs to allocate or revise a tax code for an employee or pensioner. The code reflects personal allowance, taxable benefits, other income, and any underpayment adjustments, and is used by employers or pension providers under Pay As You Earn (PAYE) to withhold the correct Income Tax. Checking the notice helps confirm that allowances and deductions match the taxpayer's circumstances for the tax year.
